Preparing to move:

Preparing to move:

When you’re preparing to move, it’s important to start with these items, as they often require the most time and notice:

  1. Removals: Get quotes from 3-4 removal companies, negotiate hard to get the best possible price. The British Association of Removers is a good starting point.

  2. Key contacts: Let everyone know you’re planning to move home by working through the Key contacts checklist. Most contracts require a minimum of a month’s notice, so the sooner the better.

  3. Moving schools: Inform your children’s existing school in writing of the final date they will be attending. Call the new school to confirm the start date.

  4. Getting rid of large items: Your local council may be able to arrange the removal of large items you no longer want. This service sometimes has a small charge.

  5. Moving pets: If your pets are not accustomed to travelling or are of a nervous disposition, you may wish to speak to your vet for advice to minimize stress.

  6. Existing furniture: Take measurements of your favourite/largest pieces of furniture that you want to move so you can take this on viewings with you.

  7. Start packing: Start packing items that you do not use frequently such as things from the spare room.

  8. Don’t forget the garden shed: Remember to pack items in the garden, garage, shed, attic, basement, and other obscure places that are easily forgotten.

  9. Storage facilities: Consider storage for non-essential items if you are moving far or have a wait until you can move into your new home.

  10. Collect boxes: Start collecting boxes as soon as possible. Lots of smaller boxes are easier and safer to move than a few heavy ones.

  11. Neighbours: Let your neighbours know in advance so they can expect the removal van temporarily in the area.

One week before:

It’s nearly time to move in, with just one week to go. Here’s a list of everything you need to start thinking about:

  1. Confirm removals: Confirm the date and time of moving day with your removal company.

  2. Packing essentials: Think about your daily routine and pack key items such as toilet paper, the remote control, a toothbrush, breakfast bowl, etc. separately.

  3. Marker pens & Box Cutters: Use permanent markers to label boxes with the room they should end up in and the main contents. Grab a cheap pack of box cutters for moving day!

  4. Dismantle furniture: Start dismantling furniture that is not essential.

  5. Inventive wrapping: Use items such as bedding and towels to wrap your valuables.

  6. Settle any bills: Pay any outstanding bills and cancel future deliveries.

  7. Food: Make arrangements for refreshments and food on moving day.

  8. Plan the journey: Plan your journey between your old and new property.

  9. Instructions: Prepare a note for the new owners explaining how things work and where they can find useful items.
